Heel pain can make every step uncomfortable because the heel absorbs much of the body's impact while walking, running, and exercising. Repeated stress can cause small injuries faster than the body can repair them. Plantar fasciitis is one major cause. It affects the strong band of tissue connecting the heel bone to the base of the toes. Pain from plantar fasciitis is usually worse when standing after a long rest, especially with the first steps in the morning.

Heel pain has several other possible causes. Heel bursitis is inflammation of a fluid-filled sac beneath the heel bone and can cause pain that worsens throughout the day. Heel bumps can develop from repeated shoe rubbing or tissue changes linked to a tight Achilles tendon. A compressed nerve can produce burning, tingling, or numbness beneath the heel. Fractures can result from a fall or an awkward landing. Children between ages eight and 12 can also develop heel pain related to growth and physical activity.

A podiatrist can determine why the heel hurts and recommend treatment based on the cause. The evaluation can include checking the location of pain, foot movement, and areas of tenderness. An X-ray can help confirm a suspected fracture and show the extent of the injury. Treatment for plantar fasciitis can include padding, strapping, or prescription orthotics, which are special shoe inserts that improve foot function. Other heel conditions can require cushioning, shoe adjustments, or medication. Persistent cases of plantar fasciitis or recurring heel bumps can sometimes require surgery. Because different heel problems require different treatments, an accurate diagnosis is important when pain continues or affects normal activity. If you have heel pain, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist for a diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.
